Orthodontic Emergencies
Handling Orthodontic Emergencies
Despite our efforts to make your orthodontic experience as smooth as possible, unexpected issues can arise. Our doctors are ready to assist with common orthodontic complications such as:
Loose Brackets or Bands
If a bracket or wire becomes loose, contact us immediately for guidance. It may be necessary to reattach the bracket promptly. In some cases, you might need to trim a wire or remove a bracket outside of office hours. If so, use nail clippers that have been cleaned and disinfected with alcohol. Remember to call us the following business day to arrange an appointment.
Wire Irritations
To alleviate discomfort from a brace wire, try shifting the wire from the sore spot using a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire won’t budge, cover its end with a bit of cotton or dental wax. In case of severe pain, you can cut the wire with sanitized nail clippers or scissors. If you're unable to manage the irritation, schedule an appointment with our office.
Missing Separators
It's common for patients to lose a separator during treatment. Don't worry if this happens, but do let us know so we can decide if it needs replacing.
Discomfort from Orthodontic Treatment
It's normal to experience some pain or discomfort during the first week after getting braces or following routine adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol can help, as can a warm washcloth or heating pad on your jaw.
